Workshop Description

This event focuses upon the numerous controversies in providing transgender healthcare specifically mental healthcare to transgender, non-binary, and gender questioning individuals. Reviewing the history of transgender healthcare science, best practices and standards of care and the challenges for psychologists in evaluating and treating transgender persons the presenter, an international authority on transgender issues, will situate the discussion of these issues in the current time when many disputes exist about how best to support transgender persons and provide the mental health support that they need.

 

 

Presenter: Erica Anderson, PhD

The presenter, a clinical psychologist for more than 40 years, is the former President of the United States Professional Association for Transgender Health (USPATH) and Board member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) which is the leading global professional association devoted to the science, practice, and advocacy for transgender persons. She was for years at the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at UCSF, where each year she evaluated hundreds of transgender youth and their families. She has been celebrated in Sweden/Europe and South America for her advocacy for transgender persons.

She is herself a transgender woman.

 

 

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

1) Explain two stages in the evolution of diagnostic criteria and terms applied to transgender persons

2) Identify four sources for scientific, professional standards, and guidelines in interdisciplinary healthcare for transgender persons and their application to mental health

3) List four factors to be included in the evaluation of a transgender person

 

California Psychological Association (CPA) is co-sponsoring with Contra Costa County Psychological Association.  CPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists CPA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. Important Notice: Those who attend the workshop and complete the CPA evaluation form will receive 2.0 continuing education credits. Please note that APA CE rules require that we give credit only to those who attend the entire workshop. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credits.
