Workshop Description
Perfectionism is a clinically significant factor that creates anxiety for people in a variety of contexts, including school, work and relationships. It is a key characteristic of many psychological conditions including ADHD, OCD and Eating Disorders. Although perfectionism can contribute to positive outcomes, it can also spin out of control and create maladaptive responses that create disabling feelings of anxiety.
This workshop will expand the participants’ understanding of how perfectionism contributes to the development and maintenance of various psychological disorders and can negatively impact an individual’s self-concept and sense of self-worth. This workshop will examine the theoretical basis for perfectionism, common ways to assess issues with perfectionism and practical suggestions to minimize the negative impact of maladaptive perfectionism.
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
(1) List two characteristics that distinguish adaptive from maladaptive perfectionism.
(2) Identify two core mechanisms responsible for maintaining perfectionism.
(3) Describe at least one (1) intervention designed to mitigate maladaptive perfectionism.
