The President's Message
by Paige Leopold, PhD
CCPA President
Warm spring greetings to all of our CCPA members. I hope this finds each of you well. I am aware of the heightened energy experienced by many with the coming of spring, the solar eclipse, and the eminent end of the school year.
Welcome to the new members who joined since my last message! As always, you are invited to introduce yourselves and your practice via the listserve. You are also welcome to contact me at drpaigeleopold@yahoo.com or any of our other Board members if you have questions or are interested in learning more about CCPA.
I would like to extend my gratitude to all of our Board members for their commitment and thoughtful contributions. A big thank you goes out to Programs Chair Dr. Alissa Scanlin for the successful hybrid Annual Meeting and CE presentation: On January 26th, Dr. Shawn Giammattei gave an engaging and informative talk entitled, “Gender Affirming Mental Health Care with Trans, Gender Diverse, and Gender Questioning Youth and their Families”. On Monday, May 13th, from 6:30-8:30, Dr. W. Keith Sutton, CCPA member, will give a 2 CE presentation over Zoom entitled, “Motivational Interviewing: The Key to a Strong Alliance and Better Outcomes.” Please consider arriving early, starting at 6:00 until 6:30, for a pre-event virtual networking time. Dr. Scanlin continues to host our First Fridays, and we have other exciting program ideas that we look forward to sharing with you in the future. As always, if you are interested in giving a presentation, either formal or informal in nature, or if you have ideas for programs or events, please let Dr. Scanlin know.
I would also like to thank Board member and Local Advocacy Network (LAN) Representative to the California Psychological Association (CPA), Dr. Katherine Plambeck for representing CPA and CCPA at the recent Lobby Day on April 23rd at the state capitol. I had the pleasure of joining Dr. Plambeck along with other CPA members and constituents. It was exciting and meaningful to experience advocacy in action on behalf of our field. This was my first Lobby Day and I did not anticipate how much I would enjoy meeting and working with colleagues across the state to speak with congressional staff about the various bills supported by CPA. I would strongly encourage others to attend at least once - and to find other ways to advocate for our practice and mental health care of Californians. Lobby Day helped me appreciate CPA’s impressive effort on behalf of mental health and psychologists in our state. Please consider joining CPA to support them. I would also encourage CCPA members to attend the next CPA Convention that will take place the weekend of September 19th, 2024 in San Jose. It would be lovely to see many of you there.
You are welcome to attend – or quickly drop by - our May and/or June monthly Board meetings before we break for the summer and resume in September. Board meetings are held over Zoom on the second Tuesday of the month from 11:30-12:50.
All the Best,
Paige
